little flags

i really do love tiny things. and i also really love flags. the combination is very exciting to me.
also, i am quite lazy when it comes to certain kinds of activities. i’ve read a few tutorials about how to make bunting and pretty much fell asleep after “step one: get out your sewing machine”. i don’t need these professional huge banners.
so i just kept loving tiny things and flag things separately.
until i saw this.
if you, too, are irresistibly drawn to tiny flags, here’s how you, too, can make your dreams come true.
you’ll need:
bits of fabric
fusible (found at most fabric stores? i had mine left over from an ikea purchase)
scissors
string/twine/yarn
an iron and a place to use your iron (a board?)
cut out rectangles from your fabric. i wanted one inch square flags, so i cut 2inch by 1inch strips.
cut out bits of fusible roughly to the size of your finished product, so 1x1inch in my case.
lay the fabric upside down on your ironing board. place the bit of fusible on one half of the fabric. run your twine/string/yarn across the fabric at roughly the mid-way point. fold the fabric in half and iron it shut, keep ironing until it’s nice and flat and glued together.

at this point you’ll have little squares blowing in the wind. almost done! now take a pair of scissors and cut the little squares into little triangles. be careful not to cut into the string!

et voila! cute little flags. i ended up with 10 feet of this stuff before i came out of my trance. it is a strangely calming process.
When The Iron Curtain Press celebrated it’s 3rd birthday, we had a little party to celebrate.

i died a little inside.
